Sami the Chimp Story: Running Away From the Belgrade Zoo

Visitors to the Belgrade Zoo are sure to find an unusual monument next to the monkey cages. That's the monument dedicated to Sami, a chimp who managed to escape from the Zoo in the second part of the eighties, not once but twice. Visitor Guide

Great War Island - Veliko ratno ostrvo

The name sounds scary, but the island is in fact very calm and peaceful. It's because there are no urban settlements there - only nature and birds. Lots of birds.

Kaludjerica

This suburban area is built entirely without a city planning permit. It's the biggest illegally built suburban area in Europe. What do people build when they have complete freedom?

Entertainment

Povetarac

DSC01457Cool in the summer season, hot in the wintertime, the Povetarac raft/boat is one of the coolest places in Belgrade right now. Come early if you don’t want to wait in line on Fridays and Saturdays, not very pleasant being above the water when it’s so cold.

Gajba

Cafe above and a club in the basement. Gajba means "crib" in Serbian and it does indeed look like a crib - only filled with smoke, booze and people.

Food

Byblos

Libanese food, nice arabian coffee and hashpipe (and bellydancers if you want the whole thing).

Zorba

Greek restaurant, good greek food, great lamb.

Three black catz hostel

Great location, nice price (from 9 EUR), free internet, but very very small, only 10 dormitory beds (6+4). Make sure to make a reservation online since this is one of the most popular hostels in Belgrade.
